PRO DEO ET PATRIA
Centennial Secondary School campus,Mattru Jong, Sierra Leone
The Centennial Secondary School (CSS) website has been developed by the Centennnial Old Students Association (CeOSA) for informational resources on the CSS campus, alumni activities, and ongoing post-war CSS projects.
Centennial Secondary School (CSS), established in 1955, as Sierra Leone’s first experimental co-educational boarding school, by American missionaries, was among one of the most prestigious secondary schools in the nation. Centennial, in the 60s and 70s, ranked among the best in national public exams especially in the area of the Sciences, thereby producing a number of engineers, scientists, professors, ambassadors, doctors, lawyers to name a few professions within Sierra Leone and the diaspora. In addition to academic excellence, CSS was also famed for her strict institution of Christian values and integrity, thereby attracting students from around the country as well as students from neighboring countries including Liberia. The school motto in Latin reads, “Pro Deo Et Patria” meaning “For God and Country” as the original goal and objectives were to raise patriotic and God-fearing young men and women.

DISTINGUISHED PRINCIPALS OF CENTENNIAL
We express our appreciation for their efforts in turning education into a process of continual help in the lives of the pupils they served.
CENTENNIAL SECONDARY SCHOOL SONG
1. Together let us march
Onward to our goal
For sake of God and Country
Let’s strive with hearts and soul
True to our motto we’ll remain
Great lessons taught
We will ever retain
2. The journey may be long
And strewn with toil and care
If only we are strong
There’s ‘not we cannot bare
With steady hearts and hands
And thought sublime
We know no heights
Too great for us to climb
3. And when the journey’s o’er
And our work is nobly done
May memories linger long
Of the victories we have won
Ex-am-ples to others will then be
Proud links to Cen-ten-nial
Brave and Free!
Cen-ten-nial: The School of which we’re proud
Cen-ten-nial: Whose Praise we sing aloud
Strong in Hope and Faith: Let’s strive to be
TO CEN-TEN-NIAL: We pledge our loyalty.
SCHOOL LOCATION AND DEMOGRAPHICS
Centennial Secondary School is located in Mattru Jong, Bonthe District, Southern Province Sierra Leone, West Africa.
MATTRU JONG COMMUNITY AND CSS DEMOGRAPHICS
The CSS campus sits on 34.5 acres of land. The student population reflects the diversity of the Mattru Jong Community. It is predominantly from the local Mende tribe but it also includes other Sierra Leone tribes like Temne, Limba, Fullani, and Creole. The students come from both Christian and Muslim faiths. Even though the school is Christian-oriented, majority of the student population reflect the national statistics of only 10% Christianity, 60% Muslim and 30% indigenous religions. The school accommodates all religions and the general community and therefore serves a diverse group indiscriminately. The school also provides the only means of preparing for college entry within a 30-mile radius. The Mattru population is about 40,000 and most people in the school region are engaged in subsistence agriculture and annual family incomes are under $1,000 per year. The UBC missionary church that operates CSS also includes about a dozen US based missionaries who also operate a health clinic in the town. Since the end of the war, which was not an ethnic conflict, security to the region has been restored.
